Hiking backpacks  are essential when setting out on an outdoor hiking adventure. One needs to prepare and plan for a safe and enjoyable hiking experience. It is important when looking for hiking backpacks to make sure that you choose one that will best fill the needs for your trip. Some considerations you might want to take into account before heading out is where you will be going and for how long? What essentials will I need to bring with me?? Hiking Backpacks are available in a wide range from a small fanny styled pack to the full size expedition packs.

Hiking backpacks are generally placed into two categories; those with an external frame and those with an internal frame. The external frame(where the frame is on the outside of the bag) is more clunky but allows for heavier loads like a tent, sleeping bag or other accessories to be strapped to the outside of  the backpack. More commonly used now a days is the internal framed model. The frame is concealed inside tough yet lightweight materials of the bag itself. These hiking backpacks are narrower, hold close to your body which helps balance and offer more adjustment for better movement while walking or hiking.

The shoulder straps are also an important feature in hiking backpacks. You want to make sure that they are comfortable and do not dig into your shoulders. Simple straps are available but with heavier loads you may want to look at curved, wider and more padded styles to help relieve some of the tension on your shoulders. Too much padding will also add to the weight of your bag. By using the hip strap and chest or sternum straps you can also relieve the strain on your back to allow your hips to carry more of the weight. Make sure that your bag also includes tightening straps. These straps are designed to take off stress from parts of your back and redirect it elsewhere which makes for a more pleasurable journey.

Some other features offered in hiking backpacks are hydration systems. A pocket designed to carry a water bladder with a hole for a drinking tube. Some bags also offer a splash cover which protects your bag and essentially makes it waterproof, this provides good protection in the rain, crossing rivers and from evening dew. They tend to house many pockets inside and outside the bag for easier access during hiking.

Before starting on your journey be sure to go and try out a variety of hiking backpacks. It is very important for it to be comfortable, the right size for your body and needs. Bring along some of the items you intend to use to allow yourself to feel the weight of the bag when it is full and on your back.
